Friends of Ibba Girls School (FIGS) (https://www.friendsofibba.org/) is a UK-registered charity, founded in 2011 to establish and support the Ibba Girls Boarding School (IGBS) in Western Equatoria State, South Sudan. FIGS provides funding, strategic guidance, and works with international partners to ensure high-quality education for marginalised girls.

About the project


Established in 2014, at the request of local community leaders, with just 40 students, Ibba Girls Boarding School (IGBS) now educates over 300 girls each year, offering both primary and secondary education in a safe, inclusive environment. The school is open to girls of all faiths and none, bringing together marginalised girls from diverse cultural backgrounds and contributing to peacebuilding in a nation where peace remains fragile. IGBS combines academic study with practical and vocational training, particularly in agriculture and life skills. This holistic approach prepares students to contribute to their families, communities, and the nation’s development. The school’s boarding model protects girls from early marriage, domestic labour, and insecurity, while fostering leadership, confidence, and social responsibility. Recognised nationally as a role model for girls’ education, IGBS acts as a beacon of hope - demonstrating the transformative power of education in creating opportunities for future generations in South Sudan.
