TackleAfrica (https://tackleafrica.org/), a Zambian-registered charity that also operates in England and Wales, has been using football since 2002 as a tool to educate young people about Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR). In partnership with Marie Stopes Zambia (MSZ), a leading reproductive health provider, the organisation aims to address the high rates of unintended pregnancy among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in Zambia. Nearly 29% of Zambian girls aged 15 to 19 have already begun childbearing, largely due to limited access to modern contraception, stigma, misinformation, and structural inequalities such as poverty and school dropout.
This project targets 6,600 AGYW across three districts—Choma, Ndola, and Chipata—using a football-based, youth-led intervention that integrates SRHR education directly into football training sessions. The approach builds on social cognitive theory and Positive Youth Development, ensuring that learning happens in a safe, informal, and enjoyable environment that encourages open dialogue and peer support. By delivering SRHR content through football drills, the project engages participants in a memorable and impactful way.
